SATA and IDE cable on different harddrives?

hey everyone.

I have a harddrive in my computer which uses a SATA cable.
But i recently found an old 160GB harddrive laying around, but it needs a IDE cable.
According to someone i know, it might cause some problems if u mix the 2 together in 1 computer.

is this true? and if so, explain please.

I've never had a problem mixing them. However in some old computers if you add an IDE it will automatically become the default and will need to be your book drive. However for most newer computers you can pick whichever to be the boot drive in the bios by simply changing the boot order. As long as your computer has an IDE controller you should be able to use the drive.
